There is a specific kind of magic that happens when history and heritage collide. This past weekend, I found myself at the center of that collision at the 50th Anniversary of the Houston Tattoo Convention. For a "tattoo-virgin" like me, walking into a space filled with that much raw, creative energy was like stepping into a different world. One that felt surprisingly like home.
Honoring the Originals
The air in Houston was thick with more than just a passing thunderstorm. It was thick with history. This wasn't just another commercial expo. This was a homecoming. In 1976, Houston hosted the first-ever world tattoo convention, and being there for the 50th anniversary felt like witnessing the "World Tattoo Convention" lineage return to its roots.
I was struck by the presence of the "Originals"; legendary artists who were there in ’76 and returned to share their craft with a new generation. Watching these premier artists work alongside over 200 modern masters, I began to see tattooing for what it truly is: an authentic, independent, and deeply personal art form.
The Craft and the Conversation
As I spent time talking with artists and vendors, I realized that the tattoo community and the El Vaquero ethos are cut from the same cloth. Whether it was discussing the nuances of 1970s historical flash or the precision required for modern ink, every conversation centered on authenticity and strength.
The people I met, from serious enthusiasts to first-time attendees, all shared a certain adventurous spirit. There’s a grit and an independence in choosing to wear your story on your skin. It reminded me of why we started El Vaquero: to create something for those who value an authentic mindset and a strong, independent way of life.
Lessons from the Hall
I’ll be transparent, I walked in a bit of an outsider, but the inclusivity I experienced was incredible. I spent the weekend handing out samples of our THC beverages, and the feedback was as bold as the art on the walls (and bodies).
- Inclusive Community: I was impressed by how friendly and adventurous everyone was, even the "old school" flower OGs who were curious to try a new format of THC.
- The Power of Connection: Seeing neighbors become excited and euphoric after sharing a drink reminded me that we aren't just selling a beverage; we are fueling a social experience.
- Authentic Feedback: From the "love it” or “not-for-me" sentiment (mostly love!) of our flavors to the appreciation for our lower-dose potency, every interaction was honest and real.

I walk away from this weekend with a deep gratitude for this creative community. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm, your art, and your stories with a newbie.
